Random Dungeon Generator Powered by GPT-3

I’ve built a random dungeon generator powered by GPT-3! A few people have asked how I created this RPG tool, so I’m going to break down everything for you, including a video where I go over some of the features of the tool. If you’ve liked my Random Encounters AI or NPC Generator AI websites, you’re going to love what I’ve built for dungeons!

GPT-2 and GPT-3 AI for RPG

It all started with GPT-2 back in 2019. After reading a blog post from Janelle Shane, I set off to build my own D&D character background generator. I used some of the data she had collected and wrote tens of thousands of words of my own. After I had thousands of D&D backstories, I fine-tuned GPT-2 with them.

The results … were not that great to be honest. However, it did give me hope. While tinkering with the dataset I’d created, OpenAI launched GPT-3. I was lucky enough to be one of the first 1,000 people to get access to the powerful language model. After getting access, I immediately got started building … a game.

Change of Plans when Pricing Announced

My original idea was to create a MUD-like powered by GPT-3. I got a lot of work done on this – about 80% of everything needed for a minimal viable product at LitRPG Adventures. When OpenAI announced pricing for their language models, I realized that a game wouldn’t be cheap to play.

At that time, I’d already built a couple RPG generators for the game. In a flash of brilliance, I decided to do a 180 degree turn and concentrate on a site for tabletop gamers. I quickly went about setting things up. After a few months of work, I approached OpenAI to get permission to launch.

They accepted me within a week, and I had a soft-launch in late 2020. Since that time, over a thousand people have signed up to become members at LitRPG Adventures. I’ve added even more generators. We not have over 2 dozen RPG generators online.

Additionally, members get access to the public content created with the tools. We’ve got over 25,000 already generated monsters, dungeons, spells, characters, and much more. My quest to save DND for the next generation had begun in earnest.

Random Dungeon Generator with GPT-3

While I had a basic dungeon description generator at launch, I wasn’t happy with it. Earlier this year, I got to work building a new and improved dungeon generator. The idea hit me after rebuilding the tavern generator on the site and coming up with some ideas.

Here’s a quick video that explains the dungeon generator at LitRPG Adventures.

While the generator is currently working, I’m not finished! I’ll be adding more features and working with DMs to make it one of the best RPG generators on the web. If you’re a tabletop gamer – player or dungeon master – I invite you to stop by LitRPG Adventures and join us today.

The new dungeon generator is just the tip of the iceberg. You can expect a lot more in the weeks, months, and years ahead. For now, I’m super proud of what I’ve built and would love for you to stop by and check it out. Thanks!
